Planning your Perfect Wedding Menu

There is so much planning that goes into your special day, but one of the things the guest will remember most is the food. You will need to keep in mind what your theme is, how much is your budget, and what is your timeline. Do you want formal dining or more of a casual dining experience for your guests?

Once you figure out some of those questions, you can move forward with your menu. Explore more than one option and make sure to do a tasting before you make a choice. Discuss the catering options that your venue allows, some venues allow outside caterers, and some require in-house catering. The following tips with help guide you through the process.

Things to consider:

-Know your budget and the number of guests

-3-4 course traditional dinner vs. casual BBQ or pasta

-Hors d’oeuvres, plated, buffet

-Guests’ dietary restrictions

Your Budget

What is your budget? How many guests are you expecting? Knowing this information can help you plan the menu. When talking with caterers or your venue ask the per plate cost. Discuss if there are additional costs like service fees or fees if you want the meal plated vs. buffet style. Find out if their price includes plates, flatware, glassware, etc. These extra costs can add up, but if you plan for them in the budget, you won’t get a big surprise on your wedding day.

Plated vs. Buffet

A buffet style is a more casual option. This family-style dining option allows your guests to choose the food options they prefer. It also can meet the needs of guests with dietary restrictions. It is a less traditional option but can be a cheaper route to go, depending on the foods you chose.

A plated meal is a more traditional formal dining experience. A plated meal is usually a 3-4 course meal that can sometimes be served to each guest. This type of meal may require some extra planning on your part. You may need to include menu options on your RSVPs so you can give numbers to your caterer before the wedding.

Timeline for the Meal

When planning your menu, remember your timeline for the day. A buffet-style meal can be a quicker option. A well-executed buffet can be completed in around an hour and a half. A plated meal could be completed in an hour and a half, but an extra course or serving it to the guests could take much longer. Talk to your venue or caterer to see which option fits your timeline.

Be creative with your menu

This is your day so be creative and think outside the box. Talk with your caterer or venue to see how you can customize the meal to your theme or personal style. Maybe you want a DIY burrito bar, an outdoor BBQ, a dessert bar, or a snack bar. Have fun with the menu and make it unique to you.

Dietary Restrictions

When you are planning remember to include options for common dietary restrictions. You can include a spot on the RSVP for guests to communicate their restrictions. When talking with your caterer, they can suggest how to navigate this issue in your menu choices. Sometimes it is as simple as offering more than one menu option to your guests.

Venue Requirements

Knowing your venue’s requirements can help you plan as well. Some venues offer all-inclusive options, some have preferred caterers, and some have no restrictions. Make sure you have your venue reserved before finalizing your caterer. It can save you wasted time and money.

Whether you choose a full-service venue or hire a caterer, hopefully, these tips will help you plan the perfect menu for your special day. Regardless of your choice of diner-style or menu choices, planning everything ahead of time will allow you and your guests to enjoy the day.
